Again and again we come across this situation where a business has got someone to register their .com domain name and then the kid has grown up and moved away. We have now spent 3 full days tracking this kid down in order to get the domain name renewed.
The client has spent years advertising the .com address and it is in all the search engines and on all her stationary etc. The fact is that you have less control over you .com than a .ie domain name.
If you are not in control over your .com domain name, you can loose years of hard work in getting the name up on search engines and linked in from all major portals and high page ranking sites.
Get you domain registered by a professional from the start, its will be cheaper in the long run!

I want to let companies and business know that if a so called “Web Expert” tell you it will cost over €1,000 to change the who is information, it is robbery. Stop and call us asap. We have had situations whereby we have worked on cases for clients that the previous website designer had registered the domain name in the wrong name and when the company in later years wanted to move to another web developer that they were asked to hand over payment of over €1,000
The internet company had registed the domain name in the wrong name and said they “owned” the name. It’s like asking a solicitor to buy a site for you. Then you build a house and live there happily. Years later you decide to sell up and move on, but only to get told that you can’t sell as technically the land belongs to the solicitor still. Then you have to pay him/her off to gets the deeds.
This is exactly what happened to one of our clients.
Please Please Please, be warned, there are sharks out there in every business, do you homework, research, ask the right questions, Who owns the domain name, is it a .com or a .ie.
If it’s a “.ie” then your in a better chance of getting your hands on it, If its a “.com” good luck tracking down the company in america where it was originally bought.

And while i’m on the subject of domain names expiring, just to let you know that when a domain name expires and the search engine bots try to index the site and finds that the information it had yesterday is gone and now there are Google Ads on the site for your competirors.
From then on your website/ domain name often starts to slip off the listings. Search Engines see that the information is no longer available and therefore they wish no longer to display the incorrect answer to their clients, ie the people browsing.
So all your hard work on choosing the write file names for good SEO, key phrases, correcting hosting platform, the correct domain name ……….all goes down the drain.
So be warned, renew your domain name and it will help your SEO

When you register your business domain name, please make sure to think about where and with whom you are registering your domain name. It is a vital part of your online identity and letting a neighbours kid register your domain often leads to problems.
In the past few months we have had clients come into us and say that they have even employed private detective to hunt down the person who has registered their domain on their behalf, but has left all the contact details as their own, rather than the company they are securing the domain name for.
So. . . Make sure that the company, be they your solicitor, accountant, printer, web designer, mates-dogs-cousins-friend, that they put in YOUR CONTACT details as the “Admin C” contact.
If this is not the case then the domain can expire and you will not be notified as you wont get an email telling you it’s due for renewal.
The Wrong Admin Contact Details
This sometimes happens with larger companies as they are registering hundreds a week, and in the bulk registration process the ownership details could get the default contact details of the person who has registered the domain name.

It looks like the world is waking up to the mobile domain name market as a woman from Edinburgh gets into hot water over the ownership and registration of a domain name she bought for a present for her son. The family state that the domain was to be used for emails on his mobile phone, but lawyers for the Narnia books by CS Lewis state in legal documents that they family are “Cyber Squatting”.
The Family are not willing to give up the domain name as they say they bought it after the early release of the domains for companies to buy them and so they bought it in good will and are not making any money from owning the domain.
She said in an interview on RTE 1 radio this morning that solicitor firms from Dublin had contacted her to take up her case. The story continues…..

The Irish Times reports that, the head of IBM has written a memo to over 20,000 staff members advising them to take a look the use of other office suite programs other than the main one, (not mentioning Microsoft Office directly).
Open Office would be a good solution for people looking to get away from the Microsoft Licenced packages and its available to download free on www.openoffice.org

We were running a maintenance script this morning on our business directories for county Wexford and found that the websites that only lasted 1 year on the web are the ones that are the worst designed. The professionally designed and correctly structured websites were the ones that have gained in search engines and have been an actual benefit to their owners. The bad ones were not even renewed and so have died.
I suppose the old saying, ” You get what you pay for” is evident to this.

Does Duplicate Content matter? This is question that people should be asking themselves. We believe that it does matter as search engines read your content they are are the first ones to notice that you have taken/stolen web copy from another website.
Google official line on this matter can be view here.
