Website Address?

March 27th, 2009 by admin

Someone has taken my website?

Someone is advertising on my website?

These are all everyday questions we hear these days as many companies are cutting back on their costs for running their businesses and choosing to maybe not renew their website address.

But I bought the domain name. . . . .

This too is often heard as companies wonder how someone has the audacity to buy the domain they already own. The Internet is not like “land” or “Property” you don’t own a domain name for ever, you register it for a period of time, usually one year at a time. Your web design company should contact you each year and let you know that it is up for “Renewal“. This means that the years registrations fees will be paid and your website address will be kept in your name.

What if you don’t renew or you forget to renew it?

Well the sad truth about is that it will probably be registered by another company within a few days if not the next day.  We have heard about 5 stories in the past week of companies who have forgotten for renew their domain name and that their website address is now registered to another company.

What does loosing a domain name really mean?

Here are a few things to consider about loosing your domain name.

  1. Change your Headed Paper
  2. Change your Business cards
  3. Change your Compliments Slips
  4. Change your Advertising signage
  5. Change your Vehicle signage
  6. Change your Email addresses
  7. Change your Answering Machines messages
  8. Change your Logo
  9. Change all links pointing to your website
  10. Get a New Website Designed
  11. Ask Golden Pages to take back every book and change your advert?
  12. Ask Google not to show the old website address?
  13. Start your link building campaign again.
  14. Basically start your business from scratch!

And all of this because you are trying to save a few Euro, Well in fact as you can see from the above list you are actually deciding to spend thousands.

So why am I telling you all of this, basically to try to help companies understand the importance of their website to their business. Building a successful business in a recession is all about being smart. Be Smart with your money, your work hard for it, spend it wisely.

Small Business Websites – Fact or Fiction!

March 25th, 2009 by admin

1 or 2 page website for my business oh and I need it to be No 1 in Google.

This is one of the most frequent inquiries we get to our offices. Often we are asked to give a quotation for developing a 1 or 2 page website for a company as they want to keep the development costs down.

This is often because a “Web Designer” has said that they charge per page for designing a website, but in fact they have missed the bigger picture. Creating a small website is fine, but please remember you will get back exactly what you put into it. One page will not get you get you No 1 In search engines. It’s just not possible.

We have talked about this issue many times and every year it comes up again and again. We have created 1 page websites (many years ago) and we know from experience that they don’t get found. We often say to clients it would be the same as getting 1 flyer printer and nailing it to a tree in the amazon. You can image the footfall that flyer would gain. None.

So the point to this rant is, do your research, put together an informative website that search engines will actually want to display to people.

Have a search for something that interests you in a search engine, then go to the last page of the search results. . . . . That’s where the “One Page Websites” Live and that’s how important the search engines thinks your business is to it’s readers.

Just trying to help if you are in the process of setting up a website for your business. For less rant and more inforamtion call me “Dave” on 053-9430748 for more.

Website Content – Who does it?

March 19th, 2009 by admin

Where do I get good content for website?

We are just after receiving a few emails from a new client who has been busy putting together content for their website. One issue that I must bring to peoples attention is that we strongly suggest not using Google Image Search to source content for your site. You can not simply grab, copy an image from there and use it on your website.

Many people assume that they can grab an image from an Australian website and use it on their website and no one will notice. Well there are programs known as “bots” basically little search programs that will trawl the Internet looking for images. Google uses one to find images for their Google Image Search function.

These image bots will read all the websites in the world in a matter of days and be able to see who is using who’s images on their site. After that the data is then used in a legal action against your company.

Take Photo’s yourself!

or get a professional photographer to take the photo’s for you. These can then be used in brochures, web sites and all your marketing material. Companies can also buy your photos online on many of the stock photography website available, namely http://www.istockphoto.com or http://www.shutterstock.com/

Take the Internet seriously, other companies do.

Wicklow Restaurant Launch Website

March 10th, 2009 by admin

Bates Restaurant Goes On-Line.

Bates Restaurant Rathdrum

Bates Restaurant Rathdrum

This is an opportunity that shows itself once a year in our industry, where we get an inquiry from a simple email into our offices requesting a meeting to discuss setting up a website for a business. And it’s not just any business. it’s “Bates Restaurant” in Rathdrum in Co. Wicklow.

Ok, I’m being a nerd, but their reputation definitely preceded them, so we knew they were looking for quality  website design and had high standards. We met the two owners of the business, one running front of house and the other bring the head chef. It was obious from the off that they had a passion for their industry and it was a breath of fresh air to see people so excited by their product, so much now-a-days is doom and gloom!

These guys inspired us as much as we inspired them and together we designed a website that we hope is going to be a great part of their business as they grown and their reputation spreads.

Services included:

  • Domain Registraion
  • Web Design
  • Web Marketing
  • Search Engine Optimisation
  • Training

Best of luck with the new website.

IIA Waterford – Website Design for Success.

March 6th, 2009 by admin

I just wanted to write up a few words about how the day went.

We kicked off on time with Irene from the IIA welcoming us all to Dooley’s Hotel on the quays in Waterford, She then asked Ciaran Cullen, the assistant CEO from Waterford City Enterprise board to say a few word and he started by introducing the services of the City Enterprise Board in Waterford and what people could expect in terms of grants and mentoring.

Then Irene introduced myself. I has a simply bullet point presentation that I expanded upon for each point. I was asked to talk about Website Design for Success, a straight forward topic for someone with 10 years experiencing, however with 25% of the attending people there being web development companies it brought new challenges as what to talk about. My objective was to educate the room about good website design even it was a bit boring for the web companies there, however as my 40 minute rant rolled from topic to topic of my real life experiences in web development over the years in dealing with start up businesses to advanced web development.

Nodding heads around the room.

It’s good to see nodding heads around the room ( and that was from the web developers) as the others were taking notes about the nuggets of inforamtion that I was giving them. When I was finished it was time for questions and as usual many of the questions from the audience were from developers. How long to design a eCommerce etc. General questions that other developers often and the ones the real clients never do. I’ve attended a few of these presentations and knew to hang back after the event to answer the questions from people looking to set up a website.

Driving traffic to your website.

Denis Hegarty from WSI then took the podium and went through the various methods of driving traffic to your website but he started out by pointing out the obvious that I had neglected to mention and that was that you have to do some research and make sure there is a target your your products! It sounds too obvious to mention but it’s so true.

Researching Keyword by various online tools were suggested to enable you to use Google Adwords better. He then went on to say that 80% of traffic comes from search engines and that in Ireland the majority of people use Google as apposed to the UK where Yahoo and Ask are very popular still.

He mentioned about how you can choose to search from the web in general or you can choose to search from Ireland specifically. He then went into detail on how you can target your keywords to areas and regions and to times etc.

Converting your Visitors to Leads. . .

  • Give them what they search for.
  • An Incentive
  • A guarantee/ testimonials
  • Something of value

Great key points that are often overlook in the website content and understanding your visitors. He also suggested other newer methods of driving traffic to your site such a Blog, YouTube, Twitter, FaceBook and other social networking websites

Well done Denis

How to get the money in?

Next up we had a youthful Keith McCabe who showed us all that he knew his onions when it came to the use of Laser and Credit Card facilities online and in fact off line too as he let us know that we could use the net to take laser and credit card details over the phone and in put them into an on-line application.

He did get into details on how the system works but i wont get into them here. I felt and chatting to Keith afterwards that it might have been a bit much for the audience but then again it does show them that this is a serious aspect to ebusiness and they have to know this kind of stuff.

Another good point was that online ecommerce could be either hosted yourself on your own website using a secure cirtificate or it could be hosted by the supplier ie Realex could do all the data storage and to allow the responsibility to rest on their shoulders and not on you as the owner of the website and the business.

He then went into more techy details as how the security and online vailidation is processed by the system, a bit too much for some, byt again we all need to understand this as this is one of the most important parts of running a eCommerce business.

Well Done Keith

Case Study by SelfCatering.ie

Mary Power, the woman behind this success story is a force of nature to be wreckoned with. She told us how the business had started back in the last 90’s when a Government Tax incentive had meant that thousands of holiday homes had been built all over Ireland. She saw the market open to starting a company to sell these as holiday home and the net was where to start off.

There first website had about 2,000 visitors in the first year! (back in those days that wasnt too bad at all, now-a-days im sure it a lot more)

1% of their business went through the Web, where as now it’s nearly 90%

They now have expanded their portfolio to villas from all over the world and the company is growing at a fantastic rate of around 400% each year. Now we are all thinking back to Denis telling us that our website had to “have a market for your products” and it looks like Mary has indeed.

She then went on to say that they had always kept the user in mind and their needs. Know what your user wants when they come on holidays has made them adapt the site to now offering more services such as baby sitting and also swimming pool alarm devices for parents with children. Now that’s what I call looking after your online audience.

I feel that Marys success has as much to do with her as it has with technology, Mary strives for success and pushes her standards for everything. She demands more. She expects more, and this is so evident as her website gives you more.  It’s 100% aimed at it’s audience and in my mind is the ideal travel website. If you have a question about a holiday or destination they will have covered it somewhere on the site.

Another good thing to hear was that the site had actually gone under several revamps over the past 10 years and the company had invested extensively in technology as a way of moving the company forward.

Well Done Mary.

Outdoor Education Centre Website Re-Designed

March 4th, 2009 by admin

Baltinglass Outdoor Education Centre

Baltinglass Outdoor Education Centre

Baltinglass OEC

We are delighted to launch the all new revamped website for Baltinglass Outdoor Education Centre. The new site is fully content managed and with the website training they have received they now have the capabilities and opportunities to bring their products and services using the best marketing tool available these days.

Paul Scott contacted us after seeing the work we have done for similar businesses in Ireland and asked us to meet and discuss their existing website. It was a little dated and did have some content management, allowing them to edit a news page. We talked about what they wanted a website to give them and then we set about on the re design of their new site to suit their target market and of course their budget.

We created a website that has produced the identity they shrived for and will meet their marketing needs. We used a variety of Social Networking websites to help them reach out and place their services in the areas where their audience are.

Services provided:

  • Web Design
  • Web Hosting
  • Web Training
  • Consultancy
  • Social Networking

We would like to thank Paul and his staff for their custom and we wish them the very best for the website.
