This is one of the points we've been trying to get across to the public for years now. In Wexford here I often give an analogy of someone building a house cheaply and then later asking to get it insulated.

I agree totally, sit down with your professional web designer and run through all the aspects of the site. We often get people in our office with sketches of the look and feel how how they want it to work and they say "Oh i know exactly what I want, I just cant put it together". We have to look at the sketch and then put it to one side and ask them what they want to achieve and get from the website as then we can see what technology will suit their project.

SEO is just one contributory facet of a successful website, David. All to often though SEO's will optimise poorly designed and developed sites to death. There's no point in having a massive footfall if you can't make any conversions because your client's site is unusable, buggy and ill conceived in the first place!

The holistic approach to Web design and development where every aspect is dealt with properly by competent professionals - from good, clear IA to solid project management, from development to security, right the way through to proper SEO and marketing - is the only way to build a successful Web presence and make any kind of return on investment.

Novices building their own websites poorly and then paying to have them SEO'd isn't really a workable solution.

Thanks for that Dorothy, Yes SEO is vital and once someone comes in through our door and sits and discusses a project the Search Engines start to come to life and they realise that they are not just "Ticking a box" in their marketing campaign, but rather starting a whole new approach of looking at their business and their products/services.

Too true! Although in recent times I find that clients are more aware of the importantance of SEO and getting the website designed correctly for robots as well as people. Those with a good business head will do the research and realise that it's worth the investment, particularly as it is still a much cheaper medium than the traditional.

Remember when the word-processor was new? People thought they could do all their printed material themselves - including designing their own logo in MS Word!
