Whilst enjoying the sunshine in La Managa in Murcia Spain recently we were able to pick up more Spanish business. Being a business that uses the web we are always able to pick up clients when we travel and last week was no difference. Before traveling we looked up a few domain names of the businesses we were visiting and one great domain name that one our of old friends at Cada Media was looking for was available.

Plural Domains

Even though may of us use search engines, may still type directly into the top address bar and guess domain names. This particular company exports motor bike helmets around the world, but had neglected to register the plural version of their company names, demonstrating that they actually have a few helmets to sell and not just one!

We registered the domain name and set up a redirect so the name will point to their original website.

Then when we were on the subject of domains  and emails the conversation came about to spam emails and viruses as one pc in the office was suffering after receiving many emails containing viruses.

We would like to inform all our clients on our business hosting packs that we have put a limit on the number of outgoing emails to avoid them being “ear-marked” as amateur spammers!

If you are using an email program like Outlook Express, Thunder Bird you will be writing an email and then adding in multiple email address and sometimes up to 40 or 50 email addresses in one go.

You are supposed to send out emails to a list of people using a special program or facility that allows multiple emails and allows this opt in, opt out feature.

We are getting  a lot of calls to the office this week asking about the following email that many people are getting. It is s scam, delete it, these people know that many people in Ireland are claiming more tax back etc

Scam Email = Delete.

If you do get an email like this just look at the location of the link that the image will bring you too. It will be a strange website address that hopefully google will have blocked by now.

My advice is to delete then call us to set up a spam filter for your email so these type of emails are not slowing down your business day. You are busy enough without having to deal with this type of confusing email.

This is spam email delete it.

The email looks like this:

You can check the report of your activities in the past 6 month that we have attached. We strongly advise you to stop your activities regarding the illegal downloading of copyrighted material of your internet access will be suspended.

You have just received a virtual postcard from a friend ! Spam Virus

Do Not Open the link on this email

Unless every person I  know has a friend suddenly sending them postcards from the edge ( of reason) I would strongly advise NOT to open or click on the link in the above email subject titled:

You have just received a virtual postcard from a friend !

it could be a recently warned against virus that will attck you computer and cause you untold misery just beforeChristmas.

the general rule with strange or unusual emails:

delete them. If you don’t know who it’s from just delete it. If its a bonafide email the person sending it to you will contact you again by phone or some other way – for eg a normal email with a persons name and information…

If you have received an email in the past 2 days from us telling you that you that your mailbox has been deactivated please note that this is not actually from ourselves, but rather an atempt by a spam bot to penetrate our new servers. The attachment mail is a text file letting you know that the .exe and .zip attachment with the email has been removed from your email.

We suspect that this went out to about 2,000 email addresses.

Your Email is fine, the fact that you got the mail is proof that it is not in fact “deactivated” but if you need any clarification please don’t hesitate in calling the office to confirm.

I got an email today from a new customer and was interested to see that they are using the eircom net email protector service and when I clicked on the link the service supplied to view the withheld content I got a great error message

“The error ‘server’ occurred, what a bummer.”
